I’ve been thinking about historical memory of the Gulag and the Stalinist repressions recently whilst working on my book, and have decided to put together a few posts of links relating to the subject. This is partly from my own need to organize the material coherently, and partly because an up- to- date list would, I hope, be useful to other people as well. I’ll say a bit more about the question of historical memory itself in a subsequent post, because there is already quite enough material for this one, on memory books. Memory books (knigi pamiati), listing the names of victims of the political repressions in the Soviet Union, began to appear in the mid 1. Razumov et al, eds, Knigi pamiati zhertv politicheskikh repressii v SSSR: Annotirovannyi ukazatel’ (St Petersburg: RNB, Mezhdunarodnyi proekt “Vozvrashchennye imena”, 2. They are still appearing, albeit at a much slower rate – some recent ones are listed on the Vozvrashchennye imena (Recovered names) website. A significant number of memory books and databases have also been put on line, primarily, although not solely, through the auspices of Memorial and the Vozvrashchennye imena project, which ultimately aims (I hope it is not too optimistic to continue to use the present tense) to build a single database of all the victims of the Soviet repressions. That is clearly no small task, and the long gestation of the project should perhaps come as no surprise. In the mean time it is part of the nature of the internet that sites get moved and links decay, and even the links sections on the Memorial and Vozvrashchennye imena websites are full of broken links, making it difficult to find some of those memory books that are currently available. My starting point for compiling this list was the following sites. I make no claims to completeness – the list is very much a work in progress, and any information about other memory book sites that can be added will be gratefully received. The material is ordered thus: 1) General lists and databases. Lists of victims by location: a) Moscowb) Leningradc) other cities and regions of the Russian Federationd) other former Soviet republicse) other countries and peoples. Lists devoted to specific groups of victims. I have translated titles and essential details about contents. In places I have included notes about sources, usage, limitations, etc, based on my own observations, but overall I have tried to keep details to a minimum, given the number of links. Citing Online Business Resources using APA Style Help: Footnotes - Wikipedia. This page explains how to create the Footnotes section for Wikipedia articles. In this context, the word . This how- to does not cover the formatting of citations within the Footnotes section, which is reviewed in Citing sources. Footnotes are used most commonly to provide: The use of Footnotes is only one of several options for providing source information in the article. Other systems of inline citation, including Shortened footnotes and Parenthetical referencing, may be used at the editor's discretion in accordance with the guideline on Variation in citation methods. Only certain types of material on the English Wikipedia are required to have an inline citation. There is no requirement to provide a citation for every sentence, because multiple sentences may be supported by the same footnote. For advice on which material should be cited, see the guidelines on When you must use inline citations, the Good article criteria and When to cite. For advice on how to organize and format bibliographic citations, see the guideline on Citing sources and examples of Citation templates. Footnotes are created using the Cite. This extension adds the HTML- like elements < ref>..< /ref> , < references /> and < references>..< /references>. The elements are also used in a number of templates; for example, it is becoming more common to use . If you have opted in, you can use either Visual. Editor or classic editing through wiki markup (wikitext) to edit most pages. ![]() The directions on this page, especially about what codes to type to produce formatting effects, are predominantly geared toward wikitext editing. For instructions on editing with Visual. Editor, see Wikipedia: Visual. Editor/User guide. The Footnotes system shows two elements on the page: A Footnote marker is displayed in the article's content as a bracketed, superscripted number, letter, or word. Examples shown respectively are: . This footnote label is linked to the full footnote. Clicking on the footnote marker jumps the page down to the footnote and highlights the citation. Hovering over a footnote marker will, depending on the user's settings, show a pop- up box containing the footnote. A Footnote displays the full citation for the source. Together the footnotes are displayed in an ordered list wherever the reference list markup . Each entry begins with the footnote label in plain text. The entire reference list is formatted in a slightly smaller font. Each successive footnote label is automatically incremented. Thus the first footnote marker would be . Custom labels are also incremented: . For example: Markup. Renders as. This is page content.< ref> Libre. Office For Starters, First Edition, Flexible Minds, Manchester, 2. The ref tags can be added anywhere a citation or note is needed. There must be content inside the tags, else an error will show. Ref tags should follow any punctuation (usually a period), not precede it; see WP: REFPUNC. There should be no space between the punctuation and the tag: Markup. Renders as. .. text.< ref> Content of the reference< /ref>. For example: Markup. Renders as. This is page content.< ref> ''Libre. Office For Starters'', First Edition, Flexible Minds, Manchester, 2. The ref tag content may also contain an internal or external link: Markup. Renders as. This is page content.< ref> ''. IPv. 6 host- names are currently not supported. If URLs in citation template parameters contain certain characters, then they will not display and link correctly. Those characters need to be percent- encoded. For example, a space must be replaced by %2. To encode the URL, replace the following characters with: sp. Single curly closing braces also do not need to be encoded; however, an unencoded pair will be parsed as the double closing braces for the template transclusion. Reference lists: the basics. For the basic reference list, add . Once the page is saved and viewed, the footnotes will be automatically generated and numbered and the reference list will be generated. The main reference list is placed in a separate section, usually titled . Notes. In some cases, a page has more than one reference list. Until 2. 01. 4, multiple uses of . This is valid, but < references /> does not offer the advanced features of . The syntax to define a named footnote is: < ref name=! These may be escaped with & lt; and & quot; , respectively. Please consider keeping reference names simple and restricted to the standard English alphabet and numerals. You may optionally provide reference names even when the reference name is not required. This makes later re- use of the sourced reference easier. Markup. Renders as. This is page content.< ref name=manchester. Libre. Office for Starters'', First Edition, Flexible Minds, Manchester, 2. This is more content.< ref name=manchester. The actual name used can be almost anything, but it is recommended that it have a connection to the citation or note. A common practice is to use the author- year or publisher- year for the reference name. This helps editors remember the name, by associating it with the information that is visible to the reader. Note that the footnote labels are incremented in the order they are used, and that they use the same label when reused, thus the labels can seem out of order: Markup. Renders as. This is starter content.< ref name=manchester. Libre. Office for Starters'', First Edition, Flexible Minds, Manchester, 2. This is expert content.< ref name=lexington. Open. Office for Experts'', Lexington, 2. And more starter content.< ref name=manchester. And more expert content.< ref name=lexington. Open. Office for Experts, Lexington, 2. When using both names and groups, the syntax is: < ref name=name group=groupname> Content< /ref> Care should be taken when deleting references to avoid creating a cite error. See Avoiding common mistakes. Reference lists: columns. Forcing a fixed number of columns has been disabled in mobile view. The number of columns to use is up to the editor, but some major practices include: For example: Using . This keeps those citations in one central location and avoids cluttering the text (and any infobox). This is purely a source code change – the actual display of the citation in the text to a reader is unaffected. For a more detailed evaluation of this method, see WP: LDRHOW. For example: Markup. Renders as. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.< ref name=Lazy. Dog/>. Amazingly few discotheques provide jukeboxes.< ref name=Jukeboxes/>. How razorback- jumping frogs can level six piqued gymnasts.< ref name=Jumping. Frogs/>. . All references in reference list must be referenced in the content, otherwise an error message will be shown. Explanatory notes may need to be referenced. Because of limitations in the Cite. Attempting to do so will result in a cite error. The template . The content may include < ref> tags. The other templates listed below in Predefined groups are variants of . The sequence of footnote labels is independent in each group. The syntax to define a footnote with a group is: < ref group=groupname> Content< /ref> The footnote marker group name must be enclosed in quotes if the group name includes a space, else a cite error will occur, otherwise quotes are optional. The syntax for the reference list with a group is. There can be more than one of these groups' lists in the Notes, References and other similarly purposed sections. These predefined note and citation groups have templates that make the wikitext markup simpler. These templates also allow a standard reference to be inserted, so that an explanatory note can have a reference, or citations can be nested. Note: If the note's text has a reference name that is used more than once, the labels will still match, but the clickable alpha characters that toggle the note's display will be next to the note's label, with links to the multiple locations of its marker in the main text. See WP: REFNAME and the first point below in . Do not enclose values in quotes. Do not enclose values in quotes. In these examples, the footnote labels match between the footnote marker and the reference list: With lower- alpha labels. Markup. Renders as. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet. This can be confusing when . See the note in the introduction of this section, above. The entries in the reference list will show the default decimal styling if. The value for . In recent versions of Wikipedia, the error no longer appears; instead an automatically generated reference list (AGRL) is displayed at the bottom of the page. Compared to the reference lists on properly formatted pages, an AGRL can be confusing to both readers and editors. But it is easily corrected by adding reference list markup such as the following. Add it at the position where the reference list would normally appear. You would like to cite the book again and again, but point each fact to the proper page. Suppose one fact is on page 8, a different fact on page 1. You could put a line in the . Or, you could duplicate the entire citation for the book in each instance, but that would be redundant. First, understanding culture helps us to understand how others interpret their environment. We know that culture shapes how people see their world and how they function within that world. Culture shapes personal and group values and attitudes, including perceptions about what works and what doesn’t work, what is helpful and what is not, what makes sense and what does not. Secondly, understanding culture helps service providers avoid stereotypes and biases that can undermine their efforts. It promotes a focus on the positive characteristics of a particular group, and reflects an appreciation of cultural differences. Finally, culture plays a complex role in the development of health and human service delivery programs. Factors that Influence Culture. While we know that cultural influences shape how individuals and groups create identifiable values, norms, symbols, and ways of living that are transferred from one generation to another, it is important for us to distinguish the differences created by such factors as age, gender, geographic location, and lifestyle. For example, ethnic and racial groups are usually categorized very broadly as African American, Hispanic, American Indian and Native Alaskan, or Asian American and Pacific Islander. These broad categories are sometimes misleading, because they can often mask substantial differences within groups. We often fail to consider the distinct factors which influence culture within larger populations that determine how people think and behave. Access My Library ® is also available on Google Play. It is a vital component of how services are both delivered and received. ![]() Cultural competence begins with an awareness of your own cultural beliefs and practices, and recognition that people from other cultures may not share them. This means more than speaking another language or recognizing the cultural icons of a people. It means changing prejudgments or biases you may have of a people’s cultural beliefs and customs. It is important to promote mutual respect. Cultural competence is rooted in respect, validation and openness towards someone with different social and cultural perceptions and expectations than your own. People tend to have an “ethnocentric” view in which they see their own culture as the best. This means more than different rates among different families from the same cultural background; it means different rates among members of the same family as well. For example, the beliefs, customs, and traditions of people from other cultures are often at odds with Western medicine and its heavy emphasis on science. Consistent with the Anglo- American emphasis on scientific reasoning, Western medicine tends to emphasize biological explanations for illness (such as bacteria, viruses or environmental causes); whereas in other cultures the natural, supernatural or religious/spiritual reasons explain the cause of the problem (the yin and yang are out of balance; you have broken a taboo; or you have been thinking or doing evil. Cultural competence is defined as “a set of cultural behaviors and attitudes integrated into the practice methods of a system, agency, or its professionals, that enables them to work effectively in cross cultural situations.” Cultural competency is achieved by translating and integrating knowledge about individuals and groups of people into specific practices and policies applied in appropriate cultural settings. When professionals are culturally competent, they establish positive helping relationships, engage the client, and improve the quality of services they provide. Culture plays a complex role in the development of health and human service delivery programs the need for the provision of culturally appropriate services is driven by the demographic realities of our nation. The following Principles are drawn from research material on the role culture plays in providing services to older adults. There is an ethic to culturally competent practice. When professionals practice in a culturally competent way, programs that appropriately serve people of diverse cultures can be developed. Each person must first posses the core fundamental capacities of warmth, empathy and genuineness. To achieve cultural competence, professionals must first have a sense of compassion and respect for people who are culturally different. Then, practitioners can learn behaviors that are congruent with cultural competence. Underlying the behavior must be an attitudinal set of behavior skills and moral responsibility. It is not about the things one does. It is about fundamental attitudes. When a person has an inherent caring, appreciation and respect for others they can display warmth, empathy and genuineness. This then enables them to have culturally congruent behaviors and attitudes. When these three essentials intersect, practitioners can exemplify cultural competence in a manner that recognizes, values and affirms cultural differences among their clients. Communication provides an opportunity for persons of different cultures to learn from each other. It is important to build skills that enhance communication. Be open, honest, respectful, nonjudgmental, and - most of all - willing to listen and learn. Listening and observational skills are essential. Letting people know that you are interested in what they have to say is vital to building trust. Communication strategies have to capture the attention of your audience. This means not only using the language and dialect of the people you are serving, it means using communication vehicles that are proven to have significant value and use by your target audience. Culturally competent service providers must take into account the full range of factors that influence how any one individual service recipient behaves and communicates. The two levels of influencing factors are: overall cultural differences between racial and ethnic groups, as well as individual- level differences (based on age, education, literacy, income, gender and geographic location). Acculturation is a process that occurs when two distinct cultural groups have continuous first- hand contact, resulting in subsequent changes in the original cultural patterns of either or both groups. Consequently, faculty and clinicians in the mental health and behavioral health fields have been working to include diagnostic and clinical criteria that would assist practitioners in becoming more culturally and linguistically competent. One concise clinical tool to aid the clinician in this process is the Outline for Cultural Formulation (OCF) found in Appendix I of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision (known as DSM- IV- TR) from American Psychiatric Association in Arlington, VA. Although intended for use with the DSM- IV TR in assessing mental disorders, the OCF is applicable to other clinical health care encounters. It provides a systematic review of the individual’s cultural background, the role of the cultural context in the expression and evaluation of symptoms and dysfunction, and the effect that cultural differences may have on the relationship between the individual and the clinician. As a result of using the OCF, the clinician provides a narrative summary for each of the following categories: 1. Cultural identity of the individual. Cultural explanations of the individual’s illness. Cultural factors related to the psychosocial environment and levels of functioning. Cultural elements of the relationship between the individual and the clinician. Overall cultural assessment for diagnosis and care. Cultural identity of the individual. Note the individual’s ethnic or cultural reference groups. For immigrants and ethnic minorities, note separately the degree of involvement with both the culture of origin and the host culture, where applicable. Also note language abilities, use, and preference, including multilingualism. Cultural explanations of the individual’s illness. The following may be identified: the predominant idioms of distress through which symptoms or the need for social support are communicated (such as “nerves,” possessing spirits, somatic complaints, and inexplicable misfortune), the meaning and perceived severity of the individual’s symptoms in relation to norms of the cultural reference group, any local illness category that the individual’s family and community use to identify the condition (such as those explained in the DSM- IV TR’s “Glossary of Culture- Bound Syndromes”), the perceived causes or explanatory models that the individual and the reference group use to explain the illness, and current preferences for and past experiences with professional and popular sources of care. Cultural factors related to the psychosocial environment and levels of functioning. Note culturally relevant interpretations of social stressors, available social supports, and levels of functioning and disability. Cultural elements of the relationship between the individual and the clinician. What's the Most Awkward Wrong Number Call or Text You've Received? Advertisers have found ways to bombard us with promotions no matter what we’re doing: watching TV, checking social media, and even when streaming music. But the future of advertising could be even more invasive when the next public event you attend is full of flying video drones projecting inescapable video everywhere you look. NTT Docomo, one of Japan’s largest wireless carriers, created this unique flying sphere that’s surrounded by eight curved LED strips that can spin at high speed while it’s flying. The design also allows the drone’s propellers to be hidden inside, so as not to obstruct images or videos being displayed. The image resolution on this 3. Apple Watch’s tiny screen. So if you were hoping one of these drones could follow you around letting you binge on Netflix all day, you won’t have the best experience. But as the technology improves, eventually this flying video drone could reach HD resolutions, and maybe even 4. K. NTT Docomo developed the drone for the upcoming Niconico Chokaigi festival, which celebrates a popular Japanese video sharing site (imagine You. Tube having its own version of Coachella) and the telco sees its creation being used at other events like concerts or sporting events as temporary signage, or as part of a larger audio- visual show. Using overhead floating signs to help direct large crowds of people seems like a generally useful technology, but it’s not hard to imagine NTT Docomo’s cool tech might eventually just turn into flying billboards, reminding you of how much a .
